PLNU Inducts 10 into Athletic Hall of Fame

On Saturday, November 22, Point Loma Nazarene University induced 10 new members into the University Athletic Hall of Fame: Kerry Morris, Kerry Everett, Jackie (Volkert) Auchard, Lesa (Kubishta) Matrai, Josh Colace, Leslie Ludlow, Jessica Rapoza, Cheryl (Bolding) Schaefer, Anna (Sieczka) Leitzke and Bill Hanes. The event took place in Nicholson Commons Dining Room, culminating the week's Homecoming festivities.

To conclude the Hall of Fame ceremony, PLNU President Dr. Bob Brower honored outgoing Athletic Director, Dr. Carroll Land.

Josh Colace - Golf- Class of 2008

Josh Colace isone of the best golfers in school history. He lettered for four years at Point Loma Nazarene University (1998 – 2002), and was named the team's Most Valuable Golfer three times. Josh also earned a spot on the NAIA All-Region II squad three times and received NAIA All-American honors in 2001 and 2002.

Josh finished fifth at the 2001 NAIA Championships and placed 12th in 2002. In his junior year, he posted a stroke average of 74.82, which is 13th lowest of all-time for a PLNU golfer. However, Josh's best season came in his senior year of 2002 when he carried a scoring average of 73, third lowest of all-time at Point Loma. Of the 12 tournaments in which he competed in during that season, Josh finished sixth or better 10 times, including one third place finish and two second place finishes. He won the PLNU/ Smee Builder's Invitational (the only Point Loma golfer to achieve that feat) and also won the NAIA Region II Championship.

Josh graduated from Point Loma in 2002. He works in real estate and makes San Diego his home.
 

Kerry Everett - Baseball - Class of 2008

Kerry Everett came to Point Loma in 1980 after an All-Star prep career at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista. He didn't miss a beat in college.
During his four seasons, Kerry led the Point Loma baseball team in nearly every offensive category, including RBI for three seasons with 56 in 1981, 35 in 1982 and 62 in 1983. Kerry's finest season came in 1983 when he batted .410, belted 15 homeruns and drove in 62 runs. Defensively, he was outstanding third baseman who possessed a tremendous arm.

Twenty-five years later, Kerry is still in the Point Loma record books as one of the top offensive producers in school history. He holds the Point Loma record for career RBIs with 171 and single season RBIs with 62. He is second in career home runs (32), doubles (41) and hits (227) and is sixth in runs scored (106).

A two-time NAIA District 3 performer, Kerry was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and played four seasons of professional baseball. Later, he played softball on a touring team where he showcased his homerun hitting skills for crowds across the country.

Kerry, a painting contractor, and his wife, Tracie and children Jon and Kyrstin, live in Temecula.
 

Bill Hanes - Meritorious - Class of 2008

Bill Hanes has been a servant at Point Loma for decades. Even after his retirement from the university, he has remained dedicated to PLNU athletics. Not only is he one of the university's all-time best fans, for more than 16 years he has served as treasurer of the Point Loma Sports Associates and has been the treasurer of the Golden State Athletic Conference since its inception in 1986.

Bill has been an accountant as long as one can remember, even dating back to his Pasadena College student days. After a few years away from the university, Bill joined the PLNU business office where he worked as assistant controller from 1983 to his retirement in 2004.

His retirement opened up another avenue of interest for Bill and his wife, Evelyn, as they began a passionate, full-time following of PLNU athletic teams. For many years the couple has attend every volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball game - even on the road.

Anna (Sieczka) Leitzke - Tennis - Class of 2008

Anna Leitzke (then Sieczka) came to PLNU in 2000 and competed for the tennis team for four outstanding seasons. She is arguably the best women's tennis player in school history. Anna played on court one in both singles and doubles all four years where she compiled an incredible record. She is first in the PLNU school record books for most wins in a single season with 30, most wins in a career with 100, and most career doubles wins with 97.

Anna helped Point Loma tennis win three GSAC championships (2001, 2002 and 2003), four NAIA Region II titles (2000-2003) and reach four straight NAIA National Tournaments. In 2003, the team reached the national semifinals, the best ever finish for a PLNU tennis team.

A four time PLNU team MVP, Anna earned All-GSAC, All-Region II and NAIA All-American honors in each of her four seasons. In 2003, she was named the National NAIA Senior Player of the Year.

Anna graduated from Point Loma in 2003 with a degree in business and has worked in the real estate and property management field since. Anna is married to Chad, a former standout pitcher for the PLNU baseball team. The couple are parents to son, Tyler.

Leslie Ludlow - Softball - Class of 2008

Leslie Ludlow came to PLNU in 2000 and developed into one of the most feared pitchers and hitters of her time. She was a three-time All-GSAC honoree and a three-time NAIA All-American selection.  She holds Point Loma school records for most career wins with 91, lowest career ERA at 0.83 and most innings pitched with 764. Leslie is also first in a single season with 29 wins, 228.2 innings pitched and has produced three of the five lowest season ERAs. In addition, she is the only pitcher in school history to put together three 20 or more win seasons.

Apart from her dominance on the mound, Leslie was a great power hitter. She is the PLNU record holder for most doubles in a season (29), and is in the top ten all-time in doubles (46), home runs (10) and RBIs (102).

Leslie helped PLNU softball achieve new heights. She was a big reason for the team's two conference championships, two NAIA Region II crowns three consecutive NAIA National Championship Tournament appearances and was a member of the national runner up team in 2002.

Leslie graduated from PLNU in 2003. She recently moved to Etiwanda and is the events sales manager for Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano, California.

Kerry Morris - Baseball - Class of 2008

Kerry "lefty" Morris came to Pasadena College in 1973 via Moses Lake Community College in Washington and immediately became the baseball team's number one pitcher. For three years, as the staff ace, he  was a key component on three outstanding Crusader squads that reached the playoffs.

Kerry's accomplishments on the mound are many. After leading PLNC with eight wins in 1974, he surpassed that feat in 1975 with 10 wins.  Those 10 wins still stand as fourth most in a single season at Point Loma.  Kerry also led the team in strikeouts all three seasons: 82 in 1973, 68 in 1974 and 71 in 1975

Though it's been 35 years since his college career ended, Kerry's name can be found in numerous places in the Point Loma baseball career record books including wins (21), ERA (2.72), innings pitched (304) and strikeouts (221). His 1.28 ERA in 1975 is still the all-time lowest in the history of the baseball program.

Kerry remained in San Diego after graduation, working in pharmaceutical sales before becoming an owner in Shoreline Partners, LLC in La Jolla. He and wife, Georgeann, are the parents of Jill and Mathew.

Jessica Rapoza - Softball - Class of 2008

Jessica Rapoza competed four years at PLNU (2000-2003). She earned All-GSAC and All-Region II honors three times and was a NAIA All-American honoree in both 2001 and 2002.

A line-drive hitting lefty, Jessica's name appears on the PLNU top-10 career list in nearly every offensive category. She holds a .366 career batting average (6th), has 235 hits (6th), 120 runs scored (6th), 47 doubles (2nd), 11 home runs (4th), 47 bases on balls (6th) and 138 RBI (3rd).

During Jessica's tenure, PLNU softball program won a pair of GSAC championships, two NAIA Region II titles and appeared in three consecutive NAIA National Championship Tournaments, reaching the title game in 2002.

Jessica graduated from Point Loma in 2003 and joined the softball coaching staff for the 2004 season, the year that the team won its third regional championship. She also played and coached in the National Pro Fastpitch League with the Arizona Heat in Tucson. She recently earned her master's degree and is working on her doctorate degree. Jessica works Santiago Canyon College as a professor of exercise science and as an assistant softball coach.

Cheryl (Bolding) Schaefer - Softball - Class of 2008

Cheryl Schaefer (then Bolding) came to PLNU in 2000 and developed into one of the most decorated athletes in school history. As shortstop and leadoff hitter, she earned All-GSAC and NAIA All-Region II honors all four years. Cheryl was the conference MVP three times and a NAIA All-American three times. She was selected as the NAIA National Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

She was a key member of a PLNU softball program that won a pair of GSAC championships, two NAIA Region II titles and appeared in three consecutive NAIA National Championship Tournaments. Point Loma reached the NAIA title game in 2002 and finished fifth in both 2001 and 2003.
Cheryl holds the school records for most career hits (318) and runs scored (196). She maintained a lifetime .395 batting average, including one season of .478. Her name is in the record book in 17 places. When her playing days were over, Cheryl had the most career stolen bases and hits in the NAIA and the most hits in a single season. She also played professionally for the Arizona Heat for two years.

Cheryl has been a member of the PLNU softball coaching staff for five seasons and was named Associate Head Coach in 2008. Cheryl and her husband, Joe, head PLNU baseball coach, live in San Diego and are parents to Braydon and Riley. 
 

Jackie (Volkert) Auchard - Softball - Class of 2008

Jackie Auchard (then Volkert) played two seasons of softball at Point Loma, and earned All-GSAC and team MVP honors each year.

Jackie won 23 games in 1993 and led the NAIA with 244 strikeouts. In 1994, she posted a 1.44 ERA to go with another 16 wins and 210 strikeouts. Her 244 and 210 strikeouts are still one and two in the Point Loma softball record book. Despite playing just two seasons, Jackie still holds the school record for career strikeouts with 454. She is fifth all-time with 38 career wins, and fourth all-time with 419 innings pitched.

After her playing career was over, Jackie joined the Point Loma coaching staff and helped guide the program to its first-ever NAIA Region II Championship game in 1999. As recognition for her pitching prowess, Point Loma's annual team award for most dominant pitcher was renamed as the "Volkert" award.

Jackie graduated from Point Loma in 1995 with a degree in exercise science. She currently works as a personal trainer in Medford, Oregon. She and husband, Daniel, are the proud parents to two children: Cheyanne and Levi.
