EL CAJON, Calif. - Four Sea Lions scored in double figures in PLNU's 83-46 win over Southwestern (AZ) Friday afternoon. It was the first win of the year for Point Loma Nazarene (1-2) after a couple of close losses earlier.

“It's good to get the first win under our belts,” said PLNU coach Ethan Hamilton. “We did some things well and we did some things that we need to get better at.”

Though PLNU easily won, it took awhile for the team to get going offensively. After a sluggish start, the Sea Lions got going when Rhett Beal hit a jumper at the 16:33 mark in the first to put the team ahead 8-7 - a lead they would hold, and expand on - for the rest of the game.

That advantage swelled to 12 with a Hayden Lescault three-pointer. Point Loma went up by 20 with five minutes remaining after Robbie McDaniel put in another bucket. The Green and Gold went into the break up 48-25.

The Sea Lions shot 51 percent in the opening stanza and sank six triples. PLNU's average trailed off in the second and ended up at 46 percent for the game. The team had its struggles from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes, making just 2-of-11.

But the game was well-in-hand by the time the second was underway and Coach Hamilton was able to give the reserves court-time. All but one of PLNU's 11 players scored led by 16 from Marek Klassen who also had five steals. Greg Murray and Robbie McDaniel contributed 11 points each with Beal adding 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“We have been able to get everyone in so far,” said Hamilton. “It's a good thing, because we are going to need all 11 players at one time or another this year.”

Southwestern (0-1) shot 36.8 percent on the game. The Eagles were paced by 14 points from A.J. Koch's 14 points. Joshua Cole scored 12.

The Sea Lions are back in action Saturday in their second game at the Hawks Classic hosted by San Diego Christian. PLNU's next foe is Holy Names (1-3) which beat hosts San Diego Christian 77-69 on Thursday.
