Sea Lions Slip in Heartbreaker

PLNU unable to score in final minute

BOX SCORE

OLATHE, Kan. – The NAIA No. 17-ranked Sea Lions were unable to score in the final minute of a non-conference loss against  Science & Arts (OK) Friday evening. The Drovers (2-1) would snap the tie with a pair of free-throws with five seconds left and claim a 64-62 win.

The game started out well for PLNU: Kaitlyn Trotter completed a three-point play after a bucket and a free throw. Trotter put in another jumper and so did Kiley Berlinksi to push Loma's advantage to 7-0.

Science & Art took over the half from that point on, however, starting with a 20-7 run that put the Drovers up 20-14. PLNU stopped the bleeding by scoring the next five points thanks to a three by Brianna Colon and a layup from Andrea Campbell.

But the Drovers seized control again and went into the break ahead of the Sea Lions 37-27. Point Loma came out of intermission on a mission and cut the deficit to one at the 11 minute mark, 46-45, capped by a another three-point play by Trotter.

Back-to-back Renee Crawford threes put the Sea Lions back in front for the first time since early in the first, 52-51 at 9:17. The scoring slowed down considerably and the lead traded hands five more times over the final few minutes.

With her team trailing 62-59 at 1:13, PLNU point guard Crissa Jackson sank a three-pointer to even the score. It would be the final scoring of the game for either side until Korie Hargus made a pair of free-throws with five second remaining.

"We showed strong character to fight and get back into the game," said PLNU coach Bill Westphal. "But Science & Arts did an excellent job on closing out both halves."

Trotter led the Sea Lions with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Campbell added nine points and nine boards in the loss. PLNU (1-1) shot just 37 percent.

Annitra Walls paced Science and Arts with 12 points. Aita Gueye scored 10.

The Sea Lions have a few days off before hosting Trevecca Nazarene next Saturday at 6:00 pm. The contest is part of PLNU's Homecoming festivities.

"We have a wonderful group here and we will get back at it (in practice) Monday," said Westphal.
