SAN DIEGO – The Sea Lions were defeated 92-54 in an exhibition game by San Diego State Monday night in the Viejas Arena. It was PLNU's second of three exhibitions this season against NCAA DI schools. On Saturday the Green and Gold took on Southern California and will play at Saint Mary's on Thursday, November 18.
The NCAA DI Aztecs showed why they are No. 25 in the preseason rankings, shooting 54.4 percent and out-rebounding the Sea Lions 48-29. SDSU also used its size advantage to register 42 points in the paint.
Point Loma scored the game's first two points on a James Hancock jumper, but quickly fell behind 18-4 to the Aztecs. San Diego State went into the break in front 52-23. SDSU led by a game-high 42 with a minute remaining in the second.
Greg Murray paced PLNU with 11 points. Wil Bush, Todd Campbell and Hayden Lescault each scored eight. Marek Klassen scored five and pulled in five rebounds.
The Aztecs were led by Kawhi Leonard's 20 points. Leonard finished 8-of-11 from the field. Malcolm Thomas added 14 points and 14 boards with Billy White and James Rahon scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.
San Diego State begins the season for real with a non-conference tilt Saturday at Long Beach State.
The Sea Lions will be in El Cajon Friday and Saturday to take part in the Hawks Classic hosted by San Diego Christian. PLNU's opponent on Friday is Southwestern (AZ) at 3:30 pm. The Sea Lions then take on Holy Names on Saturday, tip-off set for 1:30 pm.
