Sea Lions Stumble at Biola

PLNU taken down in GSAC match 3-1

box score

LA MIRADA, Calif. – NAIA No. 9-ranked Point Loma Nazarene faced a big road test Tuesday night and failed to live up to their top-10 rating, falling at No. 15 Biola, 3-1.  The Sea Lions grabbed the opening set, 25-22, but were pushed around by the Eagles over the next three stanzas (25-22, 25-11, 25-16).

Just when it seemed that Sea Lion volleyball was getting back on the right track, the loss drops the team to an 11-4 record overall, 3-4 GSAC. Biola is now 16-7, 4-3 conference.

The first two sets seemed promising. The Sea Lions won the first and were edged in the second, though it took quite a late effort from PLNU to lose by only three points. However, with a score that barely made it into double digits in the third, the Green and Gold didn't quite look like itself the remainder of the night.

The Eagles soared over the Sea Lions in the third set, with multiple runs of unanswered scoring sprees. During the whole 25-point set, BU scored on just eight service possessions. Normally, 25 points would be reached on about 18 service possessions. The Eagles kept swinging and kept scoring while the Sea Lions just couldn't keep up.

While Point Loma was able to keep up mid-fourth set, the outcome was still the same. The stanza was tied 13-all when the Eagles took off. Five unanswered points later and BU was gone.  The Sea Lions were able to scatter a few kills to add three more points, but the damage was irreversible.

Alyssa Dwyer and Tabitha Henken still contributed a combined 28 kills. Overall, Biola outhit Point Loma .309-.156. The Sea Lions' 11 service errors didn't help in the loss and 21 attack errors compared to the Eagles' 15 also made a difference in the momentum of the game.

The Sea Lions will be at Hope International University on Saturday Oct 8, game time starting at 7 pm.
