Baseball Inks 12 for '12

Coach Schaefer brings in 9 freshmen, 3 transfers

SAN DIEGO -- PLNU Baseball Coach Joe Schaefer announced his 2012 recruiting class on Tuesday. The 12 member class is made up of nine freshmen and three transfers.

Nolan Stouder                  
6'3 - 195 lbs.

Wendell HS/Wendell, ID

Nolan makes it out to Point Loma from Wendell, ID.  As a junior at Wendell, Nolan was voted team MVP, team captain, and team batting champion after hitting .545 with 5 HR and 21 RBI's.  On the mound he was even more impressive going 7-4 with a 2.27 ERA.  In 66 innings pitched, Nolan recorded 109 strike outs and held opponents to a .179 average.  Nolan was an outstanding 3 sport athlete and was a 3 time team MVP in baseball, 2 time MVP in basketball, and 2 time MVP in football.  He was named all conference numerous times in all 3 sports, and was named to Baseball Northwest's top 10 list of players in the ID/MT/WY area.  Coach Schaefer thinks Nolan is a very good athlete that has the potential to be a 2 way guy.  He is a good hitter with power, and has a really high ceiling on the mound.  He has a good presence for a young pitcher.  He has very good stuff and command.  He should contribute immediately for the Sea Lions in 2012.

Lucas DiCiccio

San Joaquin Memorial HS/Fresno, CA

Lucas comes to Point Loma from San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno.  Lucas had a great senior campaign batting .390 with 4 HR and 10 SB.  Lucas also went 10-4 on the mound with a 1.99 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 81 innings pitched.  He was named the Co-Player of the Year in the CMAC, as well as First Team All CMAC, Team MVP, and 1st Team All Valley.  As a junior, Lucas had a great season racking in his team's Pitcher of the Year award, Silver Slugger Award, and 2nd Team All League.  Lucas was also named a scholar athlete his sophomore, junior, and senior campaigns.  Coach Schaefer thinks Lucas has the potential to come in and play right away.  He is very versatile, giving us the ability to play him at either corner outfield position, 1B, or even use him on the mound.  He has a very good left handed swing that will develop some power as he gets older. 

Garrett Gooding                              
6'2 -165 lbs.

Hart HS/Newhall, CA

Garrett comes to Point Loma via Hart High School in Newall, CA.  As a junior, Garrett had an outstanding season finishing with a 2-2 record with 2 saves. In 48 innings pitched, Garrett struck out 58 batters and allowed only 35 hits while holding opponents to a .199 average.  He ended the year with a 3.04 ERA on way to being named First Team All Foothill League.  This past season Garrett helped the Indians to a 21-7 record.  He went 7-3 on the mound, logging 57 innings and striking out 72.  He recorded a 2.43 ERA on the way to being named Second Team All Foothill League.  Garrett was a member of the So Cal Cubs scout team the past couple falls, and was his senior class ASB vice president.  Coach Schaefer thinks Garrett has tremendous stuff.  He should compete for innings right away and will give us some depth from the left side.

AJ Epstein

Palo Verde HS/Las Vegas, NV

AJ comes to Point Loma after a very good career at Palo Verde HS in Las Vegas, NV.  AJ was a 4 year starter for Panthers, and also competed for Team Vegas in the California Collegiate League.  This past summer, AJ logged 8 innings in 6 appearances with an ERA of 1.12.  He also struck out 5 and held opponents to a .227 batting average.  Coach Schaefer thinks AJ has a very similar makeup to former Sea Lion Andrew Bovich.  He locates 3 pitches extremely well and has a very quiet confidence about him when he throws.  He should develop into a very quality pitcher in this program.

Collis (Trey) Hunt III       
6'1 -200 lbs.

Lincoln HS/San Diego, CA

Trey comes to Point Loma from nearby Lincoln HS.  Trey is an outstanding athlete that has had one of the more impressive high school careers around.  Trey was a 4 year starter at Lincoln hitting .439 as a sophomore with 4 2B and 4 3B with 22 RBI's.  In 2010 as a junior, Trey hit .535 with 14 2B, 27 runs scored, and 17 RBI's to go along with 10 SB.  He was named First Team All Central League.  This past season as a senior, Trey led San Diego County in hitting, batting .565 with 12 2B, 5 3B, and 4 HR.  He also drove in 36 while scoring 30 times and stealing 11 bases.  He was again named First Team All Central League, as well as First team All State by CalHI Sports.  Coach Schaefer thinks Trey has the ability to contribute at many positions.  He is athletic and versatile enough to catch and play the infield.  He is a very good hitter that tends to find the gaps.  He should see a lot of time right away in 2012.

Justin Lawrence               
6' -195 lbs.

San Diego Mesa College/Valley Center, CA

Justin makes the short trip to Point Loma from Mesa College.  Justin had a great sophomore season at Mesa after not pitching as a freshman.  This past year, Justin went 8-2 on the year and was named First Team All Pacific Coast conference and First Team All American.  Justin finished the year with a 2.33 ERA.  He struck out 69 batters in 89 innings and held opponents to a .234 average.  As a senior at Valley Center High School, Justin went 5-5 on the mound with 1 save.  He logged 66 innings pitched allowing 59 hits and striking out 57.  He finished the year with a 2.52 ERA.  Coach Schaefer thinks Justin should step in and be one of our top arms right away.  He has a great presence and competitiveness about him.  He has a good fastball and very good curveball.  He should step in and be a leader on our team immediately.

Tyler Garkow

Tyler comes to Point Loma from Mt. SAC.  As a sophomore for the Mounties, Tyler led his team with a 2.19 ERA on way to being named Second Team All South Coast Conference.  He finished the season with a 3-5 record and struck out 63 in 82 innings pitched.  He held opponents to a .229 average and logged 3 complete games.  As a freshman, Tyler went 3-3 with a 4.74 ERA.  In 7 starts, he logged 38 innings and struck out 46.  Coach Schaefer thinks Tyler is an experienced and mature pitcher who can make us better on the mound immediately.  He competed well in a good conference and should be one of our top pitchers right away.

Sam Sadler                         
6'3 -170 lbs.

Whittier Christian HS/Whitter, CA

Sam comes to Point Loma from Whittier Christian High School.  As a senior, Sam finished the season with an 8-1 record and 2 saves.  He logged 70 innings and tossed 5 complete games.  He finished the year with a 1.29 ERA with 71 strike outs and only 42 hits given up.  Sam helped the Heralds to a 23-6 record and was named First Team All Olympic League as well as First team All Area.  Coach Schaefer thinks Sam has a ton of potential.  He is long and lean and will only get better as he gets older.  He has good offspeed pitches, and can command a fastball well.  Sam should be a very good pitcher for years to come.  

Tyler Hanzawa                  
5'10 - 165 lbs.

Tyler comes to Point Loma after playing one season at junior college power Yavapai College.  Tyler helped the Roughriders to a 36-27 record and an appearance in the NJCAA Western District playoffs.  Tyler spent time as a DH and outfielder for the Roughriders.  Tyler prepped at Punahou HS in Hawaii.  As a senior, Tyler was named to the HHSAA All tournament team and Honorable Mention Hawaii ILH. Coach Schaefer thinks Tyler has the ability to contribute at many positions.  He has a very nice left handed swing that will play well in our program.  His versatility will allow us to use him in many different roles.

Chad Etchison                   
6'1 - 175 lbs.

Poway HS/Poway, CA

Chad comes to Point Loma from local powerhouse Poway HS.  As a senior, Chad helped the Titans to a 23-10 record and an appearance in the CIF San Diego Section DI semifinals.  Chad finished the year with a 7-0 record and a 2.85 ERA.  He tossed 54 innings striking out 35 and only walking 13.  Chad was named a second team All Palomar League selection.  Coach Schaefer thinks Chad has a bright future at Point Loma.  He gets good natural movement on his fastball and really pounds the strike zone.

Andy Littlefield                
6'1 - 170 lbs.

Cedar Park Christian School/Bothell, WA

Andy comes to Point Loma all the way from Washington state.  Andy was named First Team All Emerald City and First Team All State at the 1A level.  He finished the season batting .597 in league play with 13 2B, 4 HR, and 39 RBI's. He helped Cedar Park Christian to the league Emerald City league title and was voted team MVP.  Coach Schaefer thinks Andy will develop into a solid player.  He is a very hard worker and a great teammate.  He has the potential to become a very good player in this program.

Dani Schlarmann                             
6'2 - 210 lbs.

Damien HS/Corona, CA

Dani comes to Point Loma from Damien HS where he helped the Spartans to a 17-13 record.  Dani was named a Second Team All Sierra League selection after hitting .329 with 5 2B and 1 HR.  On the mound he finished the year with a 1.79 ERA.  He tossed 15.2 innings, all out of the pen, and struck out 13 while only giving up 12 hits.  Coach Schaefer thinks Dani could be a valuable player in our program.  He has good power from the left side, and has the potential to develop into a very good pitcher.
