DECATUR, Ala. – The Sea Lions have reached their second NAIA “Final Four” and will take on No. 7-ranked Concordia of Oregon in a semifinal match at 1:30 pm (CST) Friday. The last time that PLNU reached the semifinals was in 2009. The Sea Lions moved on to the championship game that year after tying Azusa Pacific 0-0 in the semis, but advancing on penalty kicks.
Concordia enters Friday's match up with an 18-4-1 overall record. The Cavs began the year by going 1-3 but rebounded nicely and have won 17 of their last 19 contests including three wins in the Cascade Tournament, a 1-0 triumph against Westminster in a NAIA Opening Round Match and two wins in Decatur: 2-0 versus #9 Spring Arbor and 2-1 against #1 Lindsey Wilson.
Alex Thomas leads the Cavs with 11 goals followed by six from Jackie Hendrickson. Adrienne Lommasson is tops with seven assists. Right behind her is Hendrickson and Erin Huisingh with six assists. Tori Talbutt has started all 23 of Concordia's contests in goal and has 58 saves and a .530 goals against average.
Talbutt, Hendrickson, Lommasson and Thomas were all named first-team All-CCC as was Brittany Orr, who was tabbed as the conference Defensive Player of the Year. Becca Long was a second-team pick while Hannah Scott and Kaylynn Winwood were honorable mention honorees.
The Sea Lions and Cavs have met just once: in the 2001 season opener. PLNU won that contest 3-1.
Interestingly, the same four teams that were in 2009's Final Four make up this year's class: PLNU, APU, Concordia and Lee. Once the PLNU/Concordia match is completed, APU and Lee will take to the pitch in the other semifinal on Friday.
