SAN DIEGO – Matthew Hart threw a complete game and held Point Loma Nazarene to just five hits to lead Simpson to an 8-3 win over the Sea Lions Thursday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
PLNU saved almost all of its hits for the team's final at-bats. Leading up to the ninth Simpson was ahead 8-0 after plating runs in the first, second, fifth, eighth and ninth innings. Designated hitter Tyler Nordgren was the only Sea Lion to earn a base knock.
After five Point Loma errors and just one hit through eight, the Sea Lions scored three runs on one out in the bottom of the ninth, capped by a three-run homerun from Brian Burkhead.
But the late surge fell short and the Sea Lions went on to lose 8-3.
Transfer right-hander Tyler Garkow tossed 4.1 innings to start the game for the Sea Lions. Garkow surrendered five hits and four runs, however just two were earned.
Southpaw Josh Dexheimer took over for two thirds of an inning and give up an earned run while Garrett Levsen threw four frames and allowed three earned runs.
Garkow (0-1) was hung with his first loss of the season while Hart (1-0) earned the win for Simpson. The Redhawk righty threw 108 pitches, walked just two and did not strike out a Point Loma batter.
PLNU's record evens up at 1-1 on the season while the visiting Redhawks (1-2) picked up their first win of the season.
The Sea Lions will play an exhibition game against UC San Diego in La Jolla on Monday, Jan 30 at 6 pm.
