SAN DIEGO --
Jack Archie tossed seven stellar innings to lead Point Loma Nazarene past NAIA No. 23-ranked Madonna 2-1 in a pitcher's duel Friday afternoon at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
Sticky situations and only two runs to work with plagued the right-hander's outing, but Archie (1-0) produced consistent results as the junior Milwaukee native did his job for the Sea Lions. In seven innings he yielded just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts.
PLNU scored early in the first inning after Madonna hurler Jeremy Gooding walked lead-off hitter Tyler Hanzawa right off the bat. A couple fly outs landed Hanzawa on third base with two outs and designated hitter Tyler Nordgren singled and brought Hanzawa home.
Within minutes of Archie's second inning, runners were on first and second with no outs. A wild pitch would have scored a Crusader at the plate, but the quick work of catcher Ricky Gingras allowed him to throw the runner out at home.
Even after Gringas' and Archie's heroics, they weren't out of the inning yet. A single up the middle from Donny Holland scored Madonna's first and only run of the game.
No one would score again until the fourth inning where Trey Hunt singled, advanced to second on a throwing error, advanced to third on an Eddie Roberts' single, and scored on a Marcus Heisner fielder's choice.
From there, all the Sea Lion's could count on was good pitching. No Sea Lion recorded multiple hits. The team recorded six in all.
Freshman southpaw Garrett Gooding took over for Archie in the eighth inning and struck out two; Chris Gonzalez was lights out in the ninth, striking out three consecutive batters to end the non-conference tilt.
All in all, pitching was the name of the game Friday. And the combination of Archie, Gooding, and Gonzalez was a successful one.
PLNU improved to 5-3 with the win and dropped Madonna to 0-3 for 2012. Gooding (0-1) suffered the loss but pitched well in his seven-inning stint, allowing just two runs on five hits.
The Sea Lions will host Madonna again tomorrow for a double header starting at 11 am.
