SAN DIEGO -- The PLNU Collegiate Scoring meet was run under ideal conditions Saturday. With 38 combined events scored on the day, the Sea Lion women placed second with 202.5 points with the PLNU men seventh with 105.5 points.
Middlebury College (Vt.) took the women's title, finishing with 208.5 points, while Oneonta State University (N.Y.) finished first on the men's side with a total of 221 points.
The meet began Thursday and Friday with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.
Seniors TJ Viola and Jeff Hester finished second and third in the decathlon, scoring 6177 and 6164 points respectively, and junior Derek DeShaw placed seventh with a score of 5899. All three Sea Lions easily surpassed the national qualifying standard, though only the top 16 scores in the nation receive berths in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in May.
In the women's heptathlon, sophomore Lindsay Honea set personal records in five of the seven events to finish third with 4206 points. Freshman Emily Loogman, making her heptathlon debut, placed seventh with 3878 points. Both women met the national qualifying standard.
Saturday featured the bulk of the action, and, despite several key team members sitting out with injury, the Sea Lions made a splash in several events.
Jennifer Van Wey led the women's team with second place performances in both the women's 100-meter dash (12.42 seconds) and the women's 200 (25.89). The junior also ran legs in both the women's 4x100 and women's 4x400 relay teams that finished third and fourth respectively.
The Sea Lions also fared well in the women's shot put, where senior Natalija Waldhuber won with a personal-record toss of 38-02. Junior Agnes Faaleaoga threw 33-06.75 to placed second. Faaleaoga also placed third in the women's discus throw with a heave of 122-02.
Sean Lewis highlighted a number of strong performances from the men's team with his return to the 400 hurdles. The junior, competing in his best event for the first time since his All-American performance last spring, won the race by nearly a full second with a time of 54.74.
Lewis anchored the Sea Lions' 4x400 relay team that finished first in heat two. Trailing by about 20 or 30 meters when he got the baton, Lewis powered by three teams on the final turn.
Senior Austen Timm won the men's high jump yet again. Though his jump of 6-06 was far below his personal best, Timm's victory Saturday was sweeter than usual. Among those he defeated was Bryan Clay, an alumnus of Azusa Pacific University and gold medalist in the men's decathlon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In the men's 400, freshman Bryce Nilsson won his heat with a time of 52.82, good enough for ninth overall. Also winning his heat was junior Brant Jones, who placed ninth overall in the men's 1500 in 4:08.
Next Saturday, the Sea Lions will host their final home meet of the season, the PLNU Collegiate Invitational. The meet will run all day.
