No. 25 Sea Lions earn 20th win of the season

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Three Sea Lions recorded double-figure kills as the No. 25 Point Loma volleyball team earned its 20th win of the season by taking down Fresno Pacific in four sets, 15-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-16, on Saturday (Nov. 2).

The win snaps a 22-match losing streak for PLNU against FPU, which dates back to 2003. It also helped the Sea Lions (20-6, 13-3 PacWest) bounce back from back-to-back losses and maintain pace in the Pacific West Conference standings with first-place BYU-Hawaii (15-1 PacWest) and second-place California Baptist (13-2 PacWest). The loss drops FPU to .500 on the season (11-11) and into a tie with Dominican (CA) for seventh place in the PacWest standings.

Heather Leavitt had a double-double with a match-high 19 kills and 16 digs for the Sea Lions. However, it was the play of middle blocker Alyssa Dwyer which proved to be the difference in the win. The junior from Gilbert, Ariz., returned to being one of the most efficient hitters in the conference tonight with 18 kills and just four errors on 31 swings for a .452 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks.

Kelli LeClair was the third Sea Lion with double-figure kills. The sophomore had 12 kills and also added 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Savannah Wedemeyer added 45 assists and Christin Fisher chipped in with a team-leading 19 digs.

"This is a milestone for us as we try to build a program that will constantly be in the top 25," said Point Loma head coach Sarah Gustin. "We've been very successful this season in beating all three of our old GSAC rivals, with two of those coming on the road. It helps us build our confidence."

Rupia Inck paced Fresno Pacific with 13 kills, and Jessie Alcorn added 10.

For the match Point Loma hit .213 while holding FPU to a .133 hitting percentage. PLNU struggled in the opening set, hitting just .103, but hit .231 or better in the following sets to win all three.

It was not easy however. In the third set, with the match tied at one set apiece, Point Loma trailed 21-19 but utilized two FPU hitting errors and a pair of kills by Leavitt to make a 4-0 run and carry that on to win the set 25-22. In the fourth set, Point Loma scored nine of the first 10 points and carried that through to a 25-16 set win and secure the match.

Point Loma is on its final stretch of the season as it attempts to become the first PLNU team to win a PacWest Conference Championship. The Sea Lions have four more matches left in the season, including hosting conference leader and No. 5 nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii. They will open a three-match homestand next Friday (Nov. 8) against Chaminade before hosting BYU-Hawaii on Saturday and Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday (Nov. 12). They will close out the 2013 regular season at Dixie State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11:00 a.m. (PST).
