SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's tennis team sent its two seniors,
Wileen Chiu and
Kiersten Steinhauer, out with a decisive 8-1 win over Vanguard on Monday, Apr. 15.
The win moves the Sea Lions to 9-14 on the season and drops Vanguard to 11-15.
The Sea Lions opened the match by taking four of the five singles matches from Vanguard which brought only five student-athletes with it on the trip. Chiu earned one of the three straight set victories for PLNU. She defeated Michaele Sullivan 6-2 and 6-2 at No. 3s.
Preethika Venugopal and
Kirsty Mountain also picked up straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Maika Adair pushed her opponent to a tiebreaker on court 1 where she defeated Juliet Labarthe 6-4, 2-6 and 10-8.
Chiu and Steinhauer then teamed up at No. 2 double to grab another point for the Sea Lions with an 8-2 victory over Gabriele Alford and Nina Pudar. Adair and
Sharon Reibstein earned the final point of the day for PLNU with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Both Steinhauer and Chiu are both four-year letterwinners for PLNU. Steinhauer has gone 30-19 in singles play in her career while Chiu has put up a 65-21 record.
The Sea Lions will now head to Hawaii to play in the PacWest Championships starting Thursday, Apr. 18.
