SAN DIEGO - After receiving a new scoreboard earlier this year and new seats last summer, Carroll B. Land Stadium, America's Most Scenic Ballpark, is beginning another round of improvements, this time to the field itself.
Â

With the grass on the field being over 40 years old and many other aspects of the field itself in need of improvement, construction was started within a week after the final game of 2016. The process began by removing the field turf around home plate and the outfield grass. The infield grass was pulled then pulled out and repurposed sod the area on the west end of the PLNU track.
Â

Over 50 truckloads and 1,300 cubic yards of soil were brought in to level the entire playing surface of Carroll B. Land Stadium. The irrigation lines have also been rerun and improved. The system controls are now completely digital to allow for more specific watering patterns, as well as being equipped with moisture sensors.
Â
The infield and outfield will each receive new sod very similar to the sod at Angels Stadium, where Point Loma played a game this past April. The field turf area behind home will also be extended from the end of the dugouts to the end of the infield dirt on both sides to improve drainage on the field.
Â

The mound is also being rebuilt from the ground up. While Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Events
Steven Riddle says the other mound was completely up to par, this new one will be built to the standards of a Major League Baseball diamond. Â
Â
Right now the construction crews will be completing the irrigation system within the next 15 days and then do a weed abatement test for the following 15 days. After this process the new grass is tentatively scheduled to be installed beginning Aug. 18. The baseball team will take the field for the first time on Oct. 5.Â
